Melanie Luther is a tattoo artist and illustrator working out of Calgary, Alberta Canada. She has been tattooing over three years and has been working as a freelance illustrator since she graduated from Sheridan College in 2012 with a BAA of Illustration. She works out of Altar tattoo, a private tattoo studio in Beltline/Mission in downtown Calgary. Her space is quiet and intimate and she is passionate about working in a way that is centered around consent for the comfort and safety of her clients and herself throughout the tattoo process. Tattooing is a sacred experience and she deeply values the trust she is given by clients. Throughout the process of designing, placing and executing the tattoo, Melanie allows time for clients to ask for adjustments or take the time to find the perfect space for their new work. Moving stencils and adjusting drawings is part of the tattoo process, and open communication and affirming consent throughout the planning of the tattoo and the actual appointment are centered in her practice. As a queer woman in the tattoo industry, the importance of safety and space to speak up are deeply important to her and she is grateful to have the opportunity to serve the queer community in Calgary.
